Basel is a European cultural centre: Almost 40 museums, some of world renown, such as the 'Fondation Beyeler' and the 'Kunstmuseum', the Basel Theatre staging plays, operas and ballet, as well as 25 further small theatres, a Musical theater, countless galleries, music stages of all sizes and over 40 cinema screens all contribute to a rich cultural life. The city ranks with the European élite in the fine arts, as is demonstrated by its hosting 'Art Basel', the world's leading contemporary art fair.

Fondation Beyeler - Wolfgang Tillmans

The Beyeler Foundation opened its doors on October 18, 1997, presenting 140 works of modern classics, including 23 Picassos. The overall collection of 200 works of classic modernism reflect the views of Hildy and Ernst Beyeler on 20th-century art and highlight features typical of the period from Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh to Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Francis Bacon. Pharmacy Museum Basel

The Pharmazie-Historische Museum of the University of Basel currently contains one of the largest and most significant collections relating to the history of pharmacy. The museum holds a scientific collection from the 1920s, which has been conserved until today. Highlights include apothecaries’ shops, historic medicaments, laboratory equipment, a complete alchemist’s laboratory, microscopes and a famous collection of pharmacy ceramics (15th to 19th centuries). The house ”Zum vorderen Sessel” is a historic location where famous men such as Erasmus of Rotterdam and Paracelsus were frequent visitors.
